Toddlers’ play area for Charlotte Turner Gardens

As you may have seen at the consultations held over the past year, and on this website following the Twinkle Park Trust 2013 AGM, a masterplan for the refurbishment of Charlotte Turner Gardens has been in development for quite some time.

One intended element of the plan is a toddlers’ play area, comprised of small scale, largely natural play equipment, intended for the gated area at the McMillan Street entrance to Charlotte Turner Gardens (pictured above). Whilst the wider Gardens can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and additions in the masterplan cater to the leisure needs of older people, an area where younger children can play and explore was felt to be a much needed addition.

Earlier this year, the Twinkle Park Trust made an application to The Veolia Environmental Trust for a grant to fund the building of the toddlers’ play area, and we are delighted to announce that an amount of £30,000 has been awarded for the completion of the project.

We hope that the play area, which adjoins the existing playground of the Armada Community Hall, will prove to be a popular spot where small children and their parents/carers can play safely and happily.

A project to improve Charlotte Turner Gardens, off McMillan St, Deptford, has received a boost from The Veolia Environmental Trust.

We have awarded the Twinkle Park Trust a grant of £30,000 towards the installation of a toddlers’ play area in the gardens. It is being installed as part of work to ensure that all sections of the gardens are accessible to the general public and also providing for different age groups with activities.

The grant was awarded at our quarterly Board meeting on 15 July 2013, when a 48 grants totalling over £1.2m were awarded to community and environmental projects across the UK.

We award grants through the Landfill Communities Fund and in the last five years we have awarded over £2m to projects in Greater London.

We will now work with the Twinkle Park Trust to finalise the details of the project and get it started as soon as possible.

The Twinkle Park Trust Co-ordinator, Carol Kenna, says, “This grant is great news and means we can push the project forward and install new play equipment in the gardens.” This will conclude a programme of work begun by members of the local community in 1994 to build a new park called Twinkle Park and refurbish Charlotte Turner Gardens.

The Acting Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Maria Cade, adds, “We are pleased to be able to support this project and look forward to seeing it start.”

The Twinkle Park Trust would like to thank The Veolia Environmental Trust for this grant, and we look forward to making further announcements on the next phase of the project in the near future.
